08:35 am: Burgundy and I noticed a group of cub scouts at Clear Lake Elementary this morning. There is a scouting recruitment meeting at 6:30PM. My step daughter wants to join Boy Scouts but she thinks Girl Scouts is boring (consists of cookie sales and has less emphasis on The Great Outdoors.) I'm an Eagle Scout with 56 merit badges. I went through the program starting with Cub Scouts. I was very involved in Y Indian Guides before that. I would love to get back into scouting but would feel out of place in Girl Scouts. I have a question that someone might be able to answer. Has anyone ever heard of a girl joining Boy Scouts?

Hey Mark. I don't think she can. In fact the official rules state 'Any boy can join Boy Scouts who is 11 years old or has completed the fifth grade or has earned the Arrow of Light Award in Cub Scouts. I think the Cub Scouts have the same deal. I don't think they're very flexible on this. Keep in mind this was the group that went to court to defend their right keep homosexuals and atheists out. I don't think they would even consider allowing a girl to join an option.

How are things going?

NO! We'll have a boy. We'll get Burgundy into a very outdoors focused girlscout troupe. Jiminy Cricket.

Love the way you slip that "my step daughter" in there.

I concur. Let the Boy Scouts keep their rules. It's not the same organization that we became Eagle Scouts in, anyawy. There are plenty of other organizations that can support Burg's needs (like Young Life, when she's older).

mslilly, you make me laugh!

I don't think it's likely that they would let her in.
Even if they did, I would be worried if she was 16 and still wanted to be an Eagle Scout! :)

Bad things.... could happen with that.

I thought of claiming she was a boy with only a modest effort at playin down her true gender. If we were active and well liked there is a chance noone would make a fuss. An outdoorsy Girl Scout program might be the best option after all. So much for my son "Burg."

Girls and boys in scouting

A division of scouting, called "Venture Scouts" consists of both boys and girls, 14 and up. Their focus is on outdoor adventures. Canoeing, rock climbs, backpacking, etc. Perhaps an answer if you are still looking.

Unfortunately, my daughter won't be old enough to be in the Venture program for a few more years. I've had to become the leader of a Girl Scout Troop, a Cookie Mom, a Fall Product focal, and an Outdoors focal instead. The troop we joined was almost nonexistent.

You see most Girl Scout troops are not set up like Boy Scouts with a program for really young, grade school aged, and then regular Boy Scouts. Girl Scouts usually consists of troops for each grade level with only one troop nearby that you can join. In our case the troop was almost nonexistent.

We need to have parents from two different families at each event. Whenever this particular other parent isn't available I have to cancel the event because the other two parents are single mothers.

I'm really enjoying getting a different perspective than I got from my years of involvement with Boy Scouts. I just learned to play hopscotch among other activites during a traing session at Camp Casa Mare in Seabrook on Saturday. However, I can't wait till our daughter is old enough to join BSA!

In the meantime, if anyone with a 5th grade daughter wants to become involved with Girl Scouts we could use another parent here in the Clear Lake Area. Our meetings are currently in Piper's Meadow but I live off of El Camino Real near El Dorado.
